Related Degrees
Combined MD/PhD
In addition to offering
the PhD in Neuroscience, we also have several related graduate
programs that offer the PhD and include a research tract
in neuroscience. In the Medical
School , these include the Departments
of Physiology, Pharmacology
and Experimental Therapeutics, Anatomy
and Neurobiology and the Department
of Biochemistry. There is also a multi-departmental Molecular
and Cell Biology Program within the School of Medicine.
Advanced degrees involving neuroscience research are also
granted in the Dental
School and the School
of Pharmacy.
In addition to the PhD,
and combined degree programs, there is a Masters Degree
offered in the Department
of Physiology of the School of Medicine. All of these
programs are administered from the Graduate
School of the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
We also have several multi-departmental
training programs. These include training in the Center
for Studies in Reproduction, a training program in Membrane
Biology, and a training program in Functional
Genomics and Molecular Medicine. Students may also
train with faculty in the Department of Molecular Biology
and Biophysics of the Medical Biotechnology Center, which
is a part of the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute.
Combined DDS/PhD
The fundamental objective of
the combined D.D.S./Ph.D. program is to graduate outstanding
individuals who demonstrate excellence in clinical skills
and in research expertise. Graduates of this program will
understand the scientific principles that form the basis
of clinical practice, will be able to identify significant
problems in oral health, and will have the requisite tools
to address these problems. Although designed as a seven year
program, an exceptional student can complete it in six years.
A maximum of two students a year will be admitted into the
program. Upon admission, a graduate oversight committee directed
by a clinical and a basic science mentor is selected to meet
regularly with the student in order to provide evaluation
and guidance on program progress. Students accepted into
the program will receive financial assistance for the first
five years of the program and will be eligible for additional
support thereafter.
The curriculum in the first
two years of the program is similar to the current dental
predoctoral curriculum except that students accepted for
the combined degree will participate in graduate level courses
in biochemistry, physiology, and pharmacology. They will
also attend weekly research seminars in the Department of
Oral and Craniofacial Biological Sciences. During the summer
between years one and two, combined degree students will
study biostatistics and begin laboratory rotations. Part
I of the Dental National Boards will be completed at the
end of the second year.
For the next three years students
will enter a research laboratory, complete elective coursework
specifically tailored to complement their chosen area of
research, progress through candidacy for the doctoral degree,
and complete the doctoral dissertation.
Beginning in the Spring semester of year 5, clinical skills will be reassessed
and any additional training deemed necessary will be provided by participation
in preclinical courses. Students will complete the final two years of the clinical
program and receive both degrees simultaneously.
